In 2015 Ryan and I went to Maui on our honeymoon, since then we've been itching to get back. It was beautiful last time but this year I was swept up in how inspiring the landscape is. It's so diverse – the lava rock, grasslands, rain forests and endless beaches. I knew going in we would have a great trip but I wasn't anticipating how much I would be overwhelmed and captivated by the view.
The clouds demanded attention everyday...which explains why we took over 2,000 photos and videos on this trip. I have been dying to paint clouds for months now and Maui was the perfect source of inspiration I needed. One of my favorite spots would have to be the wetlands near Kihei. The mountains, clouds, grass, birds and beach were too much to take in at once. I also loved the backcountry of Hana when we went all the way around through the endless rainforest and grasslands. The beauty was unbelievable, it was a humbling experience, so much to soak in with the golden light at the end of the day.
A few highlights from our trip would have to be the hike through the bamboo forest, seeing over 40 sea turtles on the Ho'okipa Beach, making friends with Uila ("wee-lah" the sweet pitbull at our second cottage), eating at "Mama's Fish House", meeting artists on the island and seeing a massive African Snail! This trip was exactly what we needed after so many rainy and overcast days in Oregon. The landscape definitely made a big impact on me and left me feeling ready to make a new series of work. I'm excited to showcase some new pieces in July in a group show at the gallery, Art on Broadway, in Beaverton. I will also be releasing a new collection in our Mason Makers Etsy Shop in mid-summer. More info coming soon!
